We will be onsite Monday to Wednesday this week at the 3M Open in Blaine, MN. The inaugural event is being played at TPC Twin Cities, situated just north of St. Paul, MN. While I’m writing this, I’m in the Media Center and it is an absolute downpour outside. Like build an ark downpour. As players were leaving the course from their practice rounds, I overheard several times comment on how surprised they were in the course conditions. It was much more firm then one would expect. This can be contributed to either REALLY good drainage (the course had some reno work) or that the course was so dry to begin with the first 1-2″ of rain will have no effect. Driving down from Winnipeg earlier this morning, I couldn’t help but notice the water in the fields and the above normal streams and rivers, not to mention some of the back cart paths at the course are muddy and messy.
While we are here we will be providing practice round coverage as well as doing some prep work for next months Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada Players Cup event. I will be posting content through out the three days so stay tuned!
I’ve already been able to watch a few players warm up on the range, including freshly minted pro Matthew Wolff.
Wolff was being closely monitored by his swing coach George Gankas. Gankas is the new “it” teacher on the PGA Tour right now, and it seems he gets a new pro in his stable every week. Wolff has a ball flight that is in rarefied space. Very few possess the natural talent he has right now and I’m definitely curious as to how he handles the week-to-week pressure that is the PGA Tour.
There is the full compliment of Tour Vans this week at the 3M Open. Taylormade’s setup is incredible to say the least. The vans are lined up on the entrance to the event so in terms of marketing, this is genius for them as it easily stands out over the shrubs and small trees.
